Addressing Favoritism in Surgery: The Need for a Change.

During the period of Sushrutha, when “Guru Bhakthi” was a significant aspect of learning, in this contemporary world, the word is misunderstood. The reason being a lack of proper system to train the junior surgeons.

Gender discrimination can be menacing to the lives of young students who step into the field of surgery with nothing but hearts full of hope and dreams.

Lack of adequate knowledge in the field and the only desire to operate the maximum number of cases, not bothering about the training part of junior surgeons, is what the so-called “Great surgeons” of today claim themselves to be.

Coming to the trainees’ part:

You have to be good, not the best.

If you voice out, you are labeled opinionated.

If you do all those buttering stuff, you would get more hands-on.

This is so sad to hear, but it’s the cutthroat TRUTH.

Where is the recognition for true talent?

Where is the recognition for true hard work?

Where is the recognition for the one who endured everything and was disciplined?

Is everything about power, favoritism, and so-called hierarchy?

When is our education system going to change?

Assessment of students should be from day one, not just an exam which is for namesake.

They should be assessed in all aspects.

As surgeons, we are chosen to treat trauma, not to create it in others’ lives.

If you are a trainee surgeon, I hope you can relate to this.

At least those who have read this, please do make a vow to set an example in the future.

When is all this going to change?

The answer is within you.

Arise. Awake and Stop Not.
